According to Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood & The Prison of Belief, John Travolta had once tried to leave the Church of Scientology in order to marry his boyfriend. Author Lawrence Wright explains in his anti-Scientology book that the actor confessed his homosexuality during an "auditing" session at the church, and was no longer interested in being a part of the community. After receiving word that Travolta had interest in leaving, church officials threatened to expose him if he left. Former Scientology official Jesse Prince told Wright that Travolta decided to stay after the church convinced him that it would be a bad career move to leave.
