Queen Latifah
has got the blues.

The multi-hyphenate will step into the shoes of another legend, blues singer Bessie Smith, in a new HBO film.

Per Deadline, the movie follows Latifah’s Smith as she “overcame her tempestuous personal life to become one of the most acclaimed performing and recording artists of the 1920s and ‘30s, earning her the nickname Empress of the Blues.”

The role is perfect for the star, who has shifted away from her hip-hop beginnings and focused more on standards and jazz in recent years.

Queen Latifah will also produce the feature through her Flavor Unit shingle. Aside from that, the artist formerly known as Dana Owens is now the reigning “Queen” of daytime TV.

Her eponymous daytime series airs weekdays in syndication and has already been picked up for a second season.
