Miley Cyrus made VMA history by choosing not to take the stage to accept her Video of the Year Award for “Wrecking Ball.”
Instead, a man named Jesse accepted the award on her behalf, giving a speech about youth homelessness and revealing that he is in fact homeless.
The media began to dig deeper into his past, finding out that his full name is Jesse Helt and, according to GossipCop, he has a warrant out for his arrest.
Helt reportedly violated probation on multiple occasions after being charged “with burglary, criminal trespassing and criminal mischief for a 2010 incident when he attempted to break into a residence in Oregon.”
Miley has not reacted to the news about her new friend, with whom she shared some In-N-Out Burger for a victory celebration after the VMAs.
While it’s a bit surprising that the pop star’s team seemingly didn’t do a background check, none of this negates what she was trying to do to raise awareness.
