One Direction begins its North American summer tour today, starting Friday and Saturday (August 1-2) at the Rogers Centre in Toronto before moving to stadiums.

And you can be assured that many eyes will also be on opener 5 Seconds of Summer, whose self-titled debut album is the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 this week. 5 Seconds has toured frequently with One Direction (the two group's have the same management), and guitarist Michael Clifford tells us that the Australian quartet's harder rocking sound is a nice complement to 1D's boy band pop:

"When we first got offered to do the tour, like, with One Direction last year, we were kind of like, 'Do we want to be seen as another, another One Direction' or whatever. But then we kind of thought if on the same show you see us play and then them play, you see two completely different acts. It made a really dynamic tour, if you know what I mean. We kind of had a bit more of, a bit more of a rock show, and theirs is like an amazing pop performance, which is what they do."

5 Seconds will be on the road with One Direction through October 5 in Miami Gardens, Fla., then starts its own tour on October 8 in Mexico City.

The group will be on the road throughout 2015 as well and recently announced a North American headlining run starting July 17 in Las Vegas.
