With the debut of “Divergent” just one week away, we're counting down the days with another exclusive Q&A with one of the stars. This time, we caught up with Mekhi Phifer, who plays Max in the highly-anticipated film, due out out on March 21.
Can you tell us a little bit about your character?
Mekhi Phifer: I play Max, I’m the leader of the Dauntless faction. We’re known for bravery and, you know, self-reliance and protecting. [Fan shouts: “They’re pretty much kick-a**!”] And yeah, we kick a**, exactly, so that’s what we do.
You’ve said that if you had to choose a faction, you would be a Dauntless man. Can you expand on that a little bit?
Mekhi Phifer: Absolutely, no question about it. Yeah, well, you know, the Dauntless, they’re sort of uninhibited. They get to sort of live life and do they’re thing. Yeah so, you know, they get to live a little and sort of be care-free in certain respects. So I like that about them.
Moving forward, what would you like to see for Max?
Mekhi Phifer: Obviously, it’s like a trilogy, so I’m just looking forward to seeing where the character goes. I’m looking forward to reading the second installment to see where Max goes, so you know, I’m as curious as you.
I asked Maggie this same question. This book series is obviously incredibly popular. Growing up, was there a book or book series that was this special to you?
Mekhi Phifer: You know, I’m almost 40 years old, but we had like “The Hardy Boys” and things like that coming up. So I liked the sort of action-adventure sort of thing.
You’re also recurring on Showtime’s “House of Lies” this season. How has that experience been working with Kristen Bell and the rest of the cast.
Mekhi Phifer: It’s great. I mean, Kristen Bell, Don Cheadle, they’re all great friends of mine. So when they asked me to come and do it, I jumped at the opportunity.
Any chance you’ll be back on TV full-time anytime soon?
Mekhi Phifer: Maybe, maybe. I mean, I’m still doing “House of Lies.” I mean, we have the whole season to go through. But yeah, of course, if it’s good, I’m there.
What else do you have coming down the pipeline?
Mekhi Phifer: I have another film coming out called “A Day Late and a Dollar Short” with Whoopi Goldberg and Ving Rames and Kimberly Elise, and a whole great cast of people, so you know, just be in tune for all of that.
Come back on March 21 to read our exclusive review of “Divergent,” which opens in theaters that same day.
