Exclusive: Bastille’s Will Farquarson Talks the Band’s Surprise Success

Bastille resumed its busy touring schedule on Sunday (January 19) with an exuberant 16-song, 75-minute show at the Royal Oak Music Theatre in suburban Detroit.

The British quartet played 11 of the 12 tracks (all but "Oblivion") from its 2013 debut album, "Bad Blood," for the capacity crowd of 1,700, opening with the title track and closing with the hit "Pompeii."

In between Bastille offered up a cover of City High's "What Would You Do," the as-yet-unreleased "Blame" and "The Draw" and "Of the Night" from the "All That Bad Blood" extended collection that came out during November, while frontman Dan Smith took a long trip through the crowd during "Flaws."

The group's Will Farquarson tells us that Bastille's success has caught he and his bandmates off guard -- but pleasantly so:

"It's so surreal. It's hard to get any kind of perspective on it... I mean, it's quite hard to get an outsider's view on it because it's quite an insular thing we do. We're so kind of caught up in touring constantly that we are never really aware of how things are being, sort of gathering pace outside the touring entity other than when people sort of give us stats or we hear we got into the Top 10 or whatever, and then it's, like, really cool... But I think the whole thing is that every step of the way is just an enormous sort of pride, and we’re just so...It's really surreal."

Bastille, which is nominated for four Brit Awards in the U.K., plays shows in Boston on Monday (January 20) and New York City on Wednesday (January 22) before returning overseas for a European tour.

A more extensive North American tour kicks off March 31 in Chicago and includes appearances April 11 and 18 the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival. Australia looms for June, with European festivals throughout the summer.
