Taylor Swift Joins “The Giver” Adaptation
Taylor Swift is no stranger to drama.
Yet it’s still a little shocking to hear that the music star is set to make her dramatic acting debut in the upcoming film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1993 classic “The Giver.”
According to Billboard, Swift joins Hollywood heavy-hitters like Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, Alexander Skarsgard (“True Blood”) and Katie Holmes in the film, which is set in a seemingly-utopian futuristic society in which children are assigned jobs and spouses.
Her role in the film is not yet known, but she joins relative newcomer Brenton Thwaites, who will star as “a young boy who is selected for life service as the Receiver of Memories.”
Bridges will play the boy’s mentor, the titular Giver, with Holmes as Thwaites’s mother and Streep as the “antagonistic Chief Elder.”
Other than a “CSI” guest appearance, Swift’s previous acting credits skew heavily into comedy, with roles in “Valentine’s Day,” the animated “The Lorax” and a cameo on “New Girl.”
“The Giver” reaches theaters on August 15, 2014. What do you think of the casting news?
