Susan Boyle: “I Have Asperger’s”
Susan Boyle made her meteoric rise to fame in 2009 as the “Britain’s Got Talent” contestant whose outstanding performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” took the world by storm and launched her singing career.
While the Scottish woman soon scored the “biggest first week sales for [a] UK debut album,” Boyle was clearly uncomfortable in the spotlight and was soon hospitalized for exhaustion.
Now the singer has come forward, revealing to the U.K.’s “The Guardian” that she was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in 2012.
“Some articles have said I have brain damage. It’s been something else,” she said. “I have always known that I have had an unfair label put upon me. I have Asperger’s."
Though she calls the diagnosis “a relief,” Boyle adds that there is more to her than that.
“Asperger’s doesn’t define me. It’s a condition that I have to live with and work through, but I feel more relaxed about myself,” she explains. “People will have a greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do.”
Among other things, Boyle made her acting debut this year in the new holiday film “The Christmas Candle,” which also stars John Hannah (“Spartacus: Blood & Sand”) and Samantha Banks (“Les Miserables”).
