Exclusive: Imagine Dragons Singer Talks Record-Breaking Hit “Radioactive”

Imagine Dragons
is finishing 2013 on a winning note -- and with greater glory ahead.

The group's single "Radioactive" has tied LeAnn Rimes' 1997 hit "How Do I Live" for second all-time longest run on the Billboard Hot 100 at 69 weeks.

The song is now closing in on Jason Mraz's record of 76 weeks for "I'm Yours" in 2008.

Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds tells us the irony is that "Radioactive" was not initially pegged as the second single from the group's "Night Visions" album:

"'Radioactive' was not gonna follow 'It's Time.' It's just [that] fans called into the radio and were like, 'I want to hear this song,' and then 'Radioactive' was a single and then 'Demons' was the [next] single and now 'On Top of the World.' They're all so, so different sonically, but I think that's good because it shows the different sides of the band. 'It's Time' and 'On Top of the World' are a little more acoustic and raw and kind of rhythmically acoustic, whereas 'Demons' and 'Radioactive' kind of show the more electronic, urban side of the band."

"Radioactive" helped make Imagine Dragons Billboard's top Rock act of 2013, ranking No. 1 on the year`s Hot Rock Songs, Alternative Songs, Alternative Digital Songs, Rock Airplay, Rock Digital songs and Rock Streaming Songs charts.

It was also No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the year. The group ushers in 2014 tonight (December 31) at the Bud Light Hotel Amphitheatre in New York City and returns to the road in February for a North American tour.

Imagine Dragons will also play Lollapalooza shows in Chile and Brazil during the spring while also working on a follow-up to "Night Visions."
