Charlie Hunnam Drops Out of “Fifty Shades of Grey”

It appears Charlie Hunnam is too tied down by TV commitments to pursue his role as Christian Grey in the film adaptation of the bestselling erotic novel “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Per “People,” Universal Pictures and Focus Features released a joint statement on Saturday regarding his departure, writing, “The filmmakers of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”

The “Sons of Anarchy” star landed the role in early September after an extensive casting search and was slated to work alongside the film’s lead actress, Dakota Johnson.

There has been no official word on who will take over for Hunnam, but author E.L. James took to Twitter with a supportive statement, “I wish Charlie all the best.”

Even before Hunnam left the project, “Fifty Shades” have been clamoring for a replacement, with a vocal group petitioning for “Magic Mike” star Matt Bomer to fill the role.

It isn’t clear whether the August 1, 2014 release date will be impacted by the change in plans. Who you think should be cast as Christian Grey?
