In celebration of the 15th anniversary of the premiere of “Charmed” on October 7, we’ve created a list of the top 5 TV witches of all time:
1. Piper, Phoebe, Paige and Prue in “Charmed”:
For eight seasons, the ‘Charmed Ones’ combined their powers of witchcraft to battle demons, warlocks and numerous other evil creatures while attempting to maintain normal lives in San Francisco. Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Phoebe (Alyssa Milano), Prue (Shannen Doherty) and later Paige (Rose McGowan) constantly struggle to balance their social lives with protecting each other, while making sure nobody finds out about their secret. Dubbed ‘the most powerful witches the world has ever known,’ it’s no wonder the “Charmed” sisters top our list of greatest TV witches.
2. Sabrina in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”:
While living with her two 600-year-old aunts Hilda (Caroline Rhea) and Zelda (Beth Broderick), along with her talking cat Salem (voiced by Nick Bakay), Sabrina (Melissa Joan Hart) is faced with the challenge of living the life of an average teenage girl while learning how to become a better witch. Sabrina is initially told she is a witch by her aunts on her 16th birthday, from then on she must practice witchcraft and succeed at school, all while maintaining her relationship with her soul mate Harvey (Richert).
3. Samantha in “Bewitched”:
Samantha Stephens (Elizabeth Montgomery) is the original TV witch. Burdened with her mother Endora’s (Agnes Moorehead) disdain for her mortal husband, Darrin (alternately played by Dick York and Dick Sargent), Samantha must balance the life of a suburban housewife with that of a witch capable of magic. With a twitch of her nose, she casts spells in order to solve the problems her family faces, whether it is related to her husband’s career or general household issues. Her magic often does more harm than good, landing Darrin in hot water with his bosses.
4. Willow in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”:
While fighting alongside her good friends, “The Scooby Gang,” Willow (Alyson Hannigan) offers her witchcraft ability to help Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) fight off demons and vampires. Throughout the series, she gains confidence in her spell-casting and eventually becomes so consumed by magic that she briefly becomes the main villain after the death of her girlfriend Tara (Amber Benson). She eventually realized the harmful effect it had on her friends and threatened to abandon her witchcraft, later choosing to aid Buffy as their hometown fell under attack at the end of the series.
5. The Beauchamp Family in “Witches of East End”
Although this new Lifetime series has just begun, we’re confident that the Witches of East End will fall comfortably among the top T.V. witches of all time. The show centers around a mother, Joanna Beauchamp (Julia Ormond), and her two adult daughters, Freya (Jenna Dewan-Tatum) and Ingrid Beauchamp (Rachel Boston), living on Long Island. After both a dangerous enemy and her wild child sister Wendy (Madchen Amick) comes to town, Joanna must inform her daughters that they are witches in order to keep them safe from a deadly family curse.
