Miley Cyrus’s new single “Wrecking Ball” is an unqualified hit, but that doesn’t mean her success has come without controversy.
With more than 61 million hits since its release on September 9, the singer’s NSFW video, in which she appears nude hanging from a literal wrecking ball and licks a sledgehammer, is only adding to the noise.
That said, her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, is in full support of the new Miley, telling Entertainment Tonight that the song is what is important, at the point where all of the elements from the singer to the producer “become one.”
“It wouldn’t have mattered if Miley would have worn jeans and a flannel shirt… a Tux… or a nun’s habit. The song’s a smash…” he told ET. “…and her performance vocally on the tune reflects her roots and sheer God-given talent.”
Billy Ray’s words echo those of Miley herself, who said the video only amps up the emotions she was working through in the song.
“I think the video is much more, if people get past the point that I’m naked and you can actually look at me you can tell that I actually look more broken than even the song sounds,” she said, according to MTV. “It was a lot harder to do the video then it was to record the songs.”
