With Beyonce’s 32nd birthday on Wednesday, September 4, we're counting down the biggest highlights from her incredible career. Whether it was getting her start with the ladies of Destiny’s Childor her big on-stage pregnancy reveal, here are Bey’s top 5 musical moments:
1. Destiny’s Child Takes Over the World: “Bills Bills, Bills”
If Destiny’s Child was a success right out of the gate, then the group was already taking over pop culture by the time they released “Bills, Bills, Bills.” The ladies showed off a new side of themselves as fierce, liberated women, which became a running theme on hits like “Bug a Boo,” “Survivor” and the fittingly-titled “Independent Women Part 1.” The lineup of Destiny’s may have been in flux, but the independent spirit has stuck with Beyonce throughout her illustrious career.
2. Beyonce Goes Solo: “Crazy in Love”
After several years of chart-topping hits with Destiny’s Child, Beyonce decided it was time to give it a go as a solo artist. Not only was her debut single a major hit, but “Crazy in Love” also featured her future hubby Jay-Z, setting the stage for a dynamite career as a solo artist. The girls didn’t officially disband for another two years, but the “writing was on the wall” after the success of “Dangerously in Love.”
3. Beyonce Gets Musical in “Dreamgirls”: “Listen”
Some might argue that Jennifer Hudson stole the show, but Beyonce solidified her place as an actor in her own right with her performance in “Dreamgirls.” After a rocky start in comedies like “Austin Powers in Goldmember” and “The Pink Panther,” she got it right playing a Diana Ross-type and later Etta James herself in “Cadillac Records.” Though she’s mostly taken a break from on-screen roles, we’re still holding out for that “A Star is Born” reboot starring none other than Bey herself.
4. Beyonce's Other Major Role: "Love on Top"
When looking for musical performers for any award show, Beyonce is always a reliable vocalist. But at the 2011 Video Music Awards, she gave the audience and MTV viewers a little something extra. After a wonderful rendition of her song “Love on Top,” the singer pulled back her sequined jacket to show off the tiny baby bump revealing that she was pregnant with her now one-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. Beyonce may have had more outlandish performances, including the last one on this list, but she’s never had another one this heartwarming.
5. Beyonce's Super Bowl Halftime Show
After welcoming her first child with Jay-Z in 2012, it seemed impossible that 2013 could be anything but a letdown. Yet in true Beyonce style, she proved that she could make any year her year with a little gig known as the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Like JT at this year’s VMAs, Beyonce didn’t forget to bring her old friends along, inviting them to perform alongside her at the Super Bowl.
With a new album said to be in the works, it’s still uncertain how Beyonce can top herself this time. That said, we have no doubt that Queen Bey can make it happen.
