The search for the third seat on the “American Idol” judging table feels like it has gone on longer than a season of the show itself.
Now the latest report has longtime guest mentor the new frontrunner to take the spot alongside confirmed return Keith Urban and the likely-returning Jennifer Lopez, Deadline reports.
Though Randy Jackson has bowed out of the hit singing competition series as a judge, rumor has it that he might return in another role, replacing Jimmy Iovine as the in-house mentor.
Harry sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show earlier this year and was asked if he’d like a seat on the show on which the talk show guru herself had a short-lived stint.
“Well, yeah, I mean I had a really good time! I had a good time mentoring,” he replied. “Judging is a whole different deal, I don’t know how good I would be at that.”
Filming on the upcoming season of “American Idol” is set to get underway soon, as the pre-taped audition episodes are set to once again kick off the new season in January 2014.
