Season 11 “American Idol” champ Phillip Phillips continues to promote his 2012 debut album "The World From the Side of the Moon" on the road -- mostly with John Mayer.
And while the crowds are certainly coming to see Mayer, Phillips tells us they've been kind to him and his band as well:
"The crowds have been awesome. Big crowds, and everyone's been, for the most part at every show, just about every show, people have been coming out really early to come check us out, and that's really awesome for them to come out to the opener, which I appreciate...And that was just kind of a dream come true. It's kind of surreal for me."
Phillips adds that he's also struck up a friendship with Mayer while they've been out on the road together:
"Yeah, we've gotten to talk a little bit. He's a really cool guy and a funny guy and very down to earth and puts on a great show."
Phillips is on the road with Mayer until October 4, including a performance at Rock in Rio on September 21 in Brazil.
"Gone, Gone, Gone," the second single from "The World From the Side of the Moon," has been certified platinum, and a third single, "Where We Came From," is just out.
