10/24 10th Annual Gravediggers’ Ball

Laurel Hill Cemetery announces the date for their 10th Annual Gravediggers’ Ball as October 24, 2014 from 7:00pm-12:00am at the Crystal Tea Room in the historic Wanamaker Building in Center City Philadelphia.

The 10th Anniversary of the Gravediggers' Ball charity fundraiser for Laurel Hill Cemetery promises to be the best one yet - a 'can't miss' this Halloween season! Ticket price includes 1.5 hours open bar cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, followed by cash bar; a dinner reception with wine; live entertainment; and free onsite parking. Special discounts are available for Young Friends (ages 21-35), and tables of ten. Tickets must be purchased in advance. A portion of all ticket sales is tax-deductible. All proceeds benefit the preservation, public accessibility and educational programs of Laurel Hill Cemetery. Attire is black-tie, masquerade OR costume, with prizes awarded for Best Dressed and Best Costumed. The Ball will also include live music by Big Ric Rising, one of the region’s best-known party bands, a 50/50 raffle, and silent and live auctions. Join us. This is a darkly fantastic time for a deeply fantastic cause!

10/27 Free Employment Workshop Helps Mature Job Seekers “Age-Proof” their Job Search

PHILADELPHIA -- JEVS Career Solutions for 55+, a non-profit program dedicated to helping mature job seekers find employment, will host a free information session/orientation on Monday, October 27, 2014, at 1 p.m. at PA CareerLink, 990 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, Pa. Seats are limited; pre-registration is required by calling JEVS at 215-560-5465 x268.

 Career Solutions for 55+, operated by JEVS Human Services and funded by Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), provides services at no cost to adults over age 55 who were laid off, need full-time or part-time work, or want to change or advance their careers. Services provided are one-on-one career consulting, job search assistance, access to online job leads, referrals to openings with JEVS’s employer partners, and detailed job readiness workshops on résumé writing and interviewing skills.

From 12 noon to 4pm there will be a family event with fun-filled kids' activities. This is followed by a Beef and Beer from 7pm to midnight. Evening ticket holders will receive a complimentary ticket for the daytime event.

Don’t miss out on this wonderful Thanksgiving Day Family tradition. All ages are invited for fun and fitness before consuming thousands of calories at the big feast. The Gobble Wobble 5K run course winds through a beautiful, quiet, residential area of Abington Township with rolling hills, while the 2 mile walk is a predominantly flat course. All proceeds of this event benefit the Abington YMCA Financial Assistance program, insuring that no one is turned away from valuable YMCA services due to inability to pay.

With African Americans having the highest breast cancer death rate among all other groups, the event empowers women to take the steps that can save their lives today, and establish healthy practices to increase the power future generations have over the disease. Expert panels will offer breast health education to survivors and women never diagnosed. Topics include: Nutrition, Stress Management & Exercise Working Together for Breast Health; Moving Breast Cancer Research & Clinical Trials Forward; Understanding Triple Negative & Metastatic Breast Cancers; the Latest in Plastic Surgery Options; The Importance of Knowing Family History for Cancer Risk. Also included are: Keynote address by Phoebe A. Haddon, Chancellor of Rutgers University-Camden, inspirational entertainment, complimentary breakfast, peer interaction and free mammogram signups for eligible women.
